Dubai Police help family take special child out

- Nandini Sircar

dubai — A big ‘thank you’ went out to the Dubai Police as Stephanie Hamilton — an expat mother with a child of determination — conveyed her gratitude for “their amazing care and attitude” in a Facebook post.

Hamilton explained in her post that her husband had applied for an emergency movement permit for their daughter living with autism and Down Syndrome.

The parents were apparently seeking permission to take their daughter, Ruby, out on a bike ride to calm her down.

They said their permit was rejected initially, as they later discovered it was applied under a wrong category. In their permit settings, they also wrote “exercise for person of determination” as the reason for emergency.

When people saw Hamilton’s Instagram post, they tagged the Dubai Police — which resulted in a prompt

response, with one police officer calling them up soon after.

The police clarified to the couple that parents of kids of determination need to write their description in detail, explaining the situation as clearly as possible, instead of just plainly asking for an emergency permit.

Thanks to the Dubai Police’s swift action, the family was granted an hour-long permit — but the family’s subsequent four-minute bike ride left little

Ruby thrilled for a long time.

Hamilton advised other parents in the same situation that it would be ideal to have a visual indicator to help identify such people when out on the road. She said a lanyard or arm band would help others understand that such residents venturing out have compelling reasons.
