Covid-19 tally hits 10K; 320 new cases in Sindh

karachi — Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday expressed concern over the increasing number of confirmed coronaviru­s cases surfacing in Karachi.

In a video statement, Murad Ali Shah said the lockdown imposed to contain the spread of the virus should be strengthen­ed, Geo News reported.

“Sindh has recorded the highest daily increase in number of confirmed cases today. The total number of cases in the country has crossed 10,000 already. Most of the cases in Sindh are from Karachi. This is very concerning,” Shah said in his statement.

“At least 320 new cases emerged in Sindh today, taking the total number of cases in the province to 3,373. Local transmissi­on of virus cases is increasing and all of us need to keep our eyes open to this ominous developmen­t,” he said in his address to the citizens.

“Three more patients have also died of the virus, bringing the total number of virus deaths in the province to 69,” he said, before presenting the breakdown of the virus cases in localities in Sindh and across the province.

Health facilities nearly full

Indus Hospital CEO Dr Abdul Bari Khan has said that health facilities responding to the coronaviru­s health crisis in Karachi are “nearly full”.

Addressing a Press conference,

he said the doctors opposed any measures to ease the lockdown because Covid-19 cases have been rising rapidly.

Next 3-4 week critical

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza on Wednesday warned about increase in coronaviru­s cases in the country and said next three or four weeks are “absolutely critical”.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, Mirza expressed disappoint­ment that people in the country did not take guidelines issued

to prevent the spread of coronaviru­s “seriously”.

He urged the people to follow guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued to control the spread of the coronaviru­s pandemic.

In a televised briefing on Covid-19, Dr Zafar Mirza said the government would have 20,000 diagnostic capacity per day by the end of this month.

“We are increasing our disease testing capacity day by day to effectivel­y fight coronaviru­s,” Dr Mirza said. —
