DRESSED TO CHILL
AS THE WORLD CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES TODAY, FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AT HOME
It’s ironic but, these days, we have social distancing to thank for creating an opportunity to get closer to loved ones. The preventive measure has resulted in families spending more time together than they did before, getting to know each other better, and using this time to improve their relationships. Unfortunately, it also has its downsides for some families, whose time together can create increased stress, frustration, boredom, and even lead to conflict. Families can be an important source of support in times of distress and, therefore, the importance of developing quality time and improving relationships is critical. Here are some creative means to that end:
Develop new routines: Studies have shown that planning and executing new routines that connect you to what really matters in life is the best recipe for good mental health, so establishing a structure and predictability within the family is important. The first step could be creating a schedule that lays out the plan for the day and how time will be spent. It could include regular wake-up times, work and school times, as well as play and mealtimes. Create time for breaks too!
Make virtual connections: The social distancing guidelines mean we only have access to direct members of the family or members of the same household. Fortunately, the Internet allows us to communicate with individuals from all over the world and stay connected with others in creative ways. Take the opportunity to introduce your family to friends they have not met, or schedule regular family calls with extended family members or friends. Families can organise virtual play dates for their children too.
Have virtual adventures: For their safety, children under the age of 12 are restricted from going out. This may increase the tension within the house, but you can use this time to organise virtual field trips, making
use of newly available resources being offered by museums, art galleries, and even musicals. If you are looking to reduce children’s screen time, there are also resources available to create off-screen activities for young ones.
Create hobby clubs: Families who cook together, craft together, dance together and laugh together, stay together! As you get to know each other better, you can find new ways to bond that everyone can enjoy. You can also let family members take turns to choose family activities each day. Consider creating clubs according to what your family appreciates, such as reading, movies, dance, board games, art, yoga etc.
Practise positivity: Remember to find ways to express gratitude and appreciation, and acknowledge the positive actions of your family members rather than focusing on the negative patterns. Don’t forget me-time: Silence is also good for our health, so do schedule time for space and ‘alone breaks’ to relax.
