Youth group raises funds to help feed workers
dubai — They say some kids can’t sit still as they #StayHome — that’s true for around 30 youngsters in the UAE who believe they have to do something to help those in need. So, they have been raising funds and providing meals to workers in a five-day Ramadan drive that started on Tuesday.
They are members of youth organisation Step Up Dubai and they called their campaign ‘Ramadan Meals’. In partnership with Jawan Restaurant, the group aims to distribute 500 meals a day to workers living in Sharjah industrial area.
They decided to launch the drive during the last few days of Ramadan, after learning that during this period, food campaigns are usually wrapped up.
Saima Khan, founder and president of Step Up Dubai, said: “Food drives and campaigns usually come to an end in the last 10 days of the holy month as people get busy with Eid preparations or with their worship. So, we launched this campaign in the last five days of the holy month and we intend to conclude it after celebrating Eid.”
Their aim, Khan said, is to comfort workers, especially those who have been affected by Covid-19.
“We have members who are as young as six years old, while the oldest one would be 25 years old,” Khan said. “Due to the stay-athome policy, we have asked all of them to reach out to the community in innovative ways through social media and encourage people to donate for Ramadan Meals so we can feed more workers and help them celebrate Eid happily.”
Donors can place orders for as many Dh11 meal boxes through Step Up Dubai’s online portal.
Every day, the oldest member of the group also joins the restaurant team in the food distribution.
