abu dhabi— Indian associations in Abu Dhabi ensured that there would be food on the plates of more than 11,000 people, who couldn’t afford an Eid Al Fitr feast on Sunday.

After morning prayers, volunteers of the Indian Islamic Centre (IIC) and the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) Abu Dhabi got to work, packing 11,000 kits of biryani, fruit and water for distribution. Each box has enough food for more than one person.

And by afternoon, the volunteers — following all precautionary measures — reached out to 11,000 people with more than 4,000 of them in workers’ accommodations of Musaffah and the suburbs of Baniyas.

KMCC president Shukoorali Kallungal said the initiative was rolled out so that the less fortunate can also mark the occasion in festive spirits.

“This Eid is different for mankind. People are in distress. Our effort is only to offer little support. There are those who are stranded, some are stuck here on visit visa, others lost their jobs or facing pay cuts. We want to bring a smile on those faces. At least let them forget their miseries for a while,” Kallungal said.

Volunteers split into various groups covered the Abu Dhabi mainland, industrial areas and suburbs just in time for people to enjoy Eid lunch. These food kits were arranged from restaurants in Abu Dhabi. The IIC and KMCC volunteers had also distributed Iftar kits all through the holy month. Additionally, they continue their daily Covid-19 relief activities.
