ABU DHABI — Generous donations have been announced from the UAE for those affected by the Beirut port explosion.

A whopping Dh10 million was donated by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Developmen­t Foundation, to the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) to mitigate the effects of the disaster.

A total of Dh5 million from the proceeds of the ninth edition of the “Ataya” charity exhibition will be allocated to the treatment of injured children in Lebanon’s explosion, said Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, wife of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representa­tive in the Western Region, assistant to the chairman of the ERC for Women’s Affairs, and chairperso­n of the Higher Committee for Ataya initiative.

A part of the proceeds of the exhibition had earlier been allocated to treat children with congenital deformatio­ns in many countries.

Dr Hamdan Musallam Al Mazrouei, chairman of the board of directors of the ERC, said his family is donating Dh1 million to provide for the humanitari­an needs for victims of Beirut’s port explosion.

Meanwhile, a page dedicated to receive donations for Lebanon has been launched by the ERC online. —
