Baby now able to see parents, thanks to cornea transplant
abu dhabi — Thanks to a successful double-cornea transplant, a four-month-old Emirati baby born with vision issues was finally able to see the faces of her parents.
“We are happy that our baby can now see us and respond. We are grateful to the doctor and medical staff at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC),” the parents said. After the complex surgery, the movement and response of her eyes became normal and tests showed her vision had improved.
Dr Murad Manea Al Obthani, consultant ophthalmologist at SKMC, who led the surgery, said the corneas of the baby were not fully developed when she was born.
“The cornea was not clear since birth. We implanted the first cornea about a month ago. The results were very good. We noticed an excellent response in the infant. The eye movement became normal and her vision improved. We performed a cornea transplant for the second eye last week. The results are very promising,” Dr Al Obthani said.
“The surgery was successfully performed in two hours, with meticulous precision. The baby is now in perfect health and recovering.”
Dr Al Obthani said the parents were relieved as they saw their baby now reacting to their love and care.

The two corneal layers were obtained from an eye bank in the US.
