Sharjah gets four new markets
sharjah — Four new markets have been constructed at a cost of Dh30 million in the central region of Sharjah by Sharjah Public Work Department (SPWD) to cater to the needs of residents.
The four markets include a Friday market, a livestock and fish market in Al Bataih, and a fodder market in Al Madam.
The markets have been completed and handed over to the authorities concerned for their official inauguration, said Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, chairman of SPWD.
Friday souq
The Friday market’s design is inspired by the local culture and heritage, said the official. “The market is in a key area next to the livestock and camel market and the municipality of Al Bataih.”
Constructed in an area of 13,000sqm, the market includes 15 shops and 40 car spaces, he added. “It will benefit Al Bataih residents, as well as neighbourhoods near Sharjah–Al Dhaid Road. The market houses commercial stores to serve people’s needs and provides investment opportunities.”
Livestock and slaughterhouse
The department has also built a market for livestock in Al Bataih area at a cost of Dh17 million, said
Mohammad bin Yarouf, director of projects at the SPWD. He pointed out that the market is spread across an area of 37,000sqm.
Bin Yarouf emphasised that the market has more than 23 stockades dedicated to livestock of various kinds. Each stockade is constructed on 57sqm with a front yard. It is separated by a fence in front of each shop. The camel section has 21 barns, each of 90sqm, with an open front yard and separated by a fence.
“Attached to the livestock market is a sophisticated slaughterhouse which is fully equipped with the latest technologies,” said Yarouf.
Birds and cattle feed
Two large buildings have been constructed specifically for the the sale of fodder, each containing 10 shops
— each with area of 41sqm. There are four shaded areas for auction.
The market also has a are for selling birds. There are eight shops, each on 27sqm in this building. The market is surrounded by a grid wall 846 metres long, with two main gates.
Fresh fish all day long
The department has constructed a fish market in Al Bataih, said Khalifa Al Darmaki, director of Al Dhaid branch of the SPWD. This market has a building whose ground floor covers an area of 810sqm. It consists of 16 fish shops, and each shop’s area is 35sqm with a hall for cleaning and cutting fish apart from administrative offices and service rooms.
