Abu Dhabi kicks off grand Zayed festival
abu dhabi — Residents of all ages on Friday trooped to Abu Dhabi’s Al Wathba area as the Sheikh Zayed Festival opened for its three-month run this year.
One of the largest cultural events in the UAE, the Zayed fest has lined up 3,500 activities and more than 500 major public shows and events for its visitors. Throughout the festival, over a hundred events will also be organised for children.
Stringent safety protocols are being implemented at the venue, with thorough disinfection done periodically and thermal checks at the entrance.
As soon as visitors step inside,
a remarkable tour of the world’s cultural wonders begins, with a showcase of popular landmarks and neighbourhoods from around the globe. More than 30 countries are taking part in the event for this edition.
Besides global-themed thrills, families also get to travel back in time to explore the history of the UAE. Grand pavilions and exhibitions offer live displays of Emirati traditions. The fountain and laser show is another treat, which is held every half hour every day. This year’s fountain spectacle features several contemporary snippets and interesting artistic performances.
There are also car shows, which feature both vintage and modified cars, as well as monster trucks and motorcycles.
When it comes to food, visitors are spoilt for choice, with a “wide selection of the best local and international restaurants and food trucks”.
Those who want to try their hand in laser shooting can take on a challenge or enter a competition with a team.
The festival will welcome up to 80,000 visitors per day. An admission ticket costs Dh5, but entry is free for people of determination and children under 10 years old.
Those who wish to catch the fireworks could plan their visit on a Friday. The show starts at 9pm near Gate 2. There will also be grand fireworks displays on National Day and New Year’s Eve.
