The Dubai Police managed to recover a diamond worth thousands of dirhams, within four hours after it was stolen inside a hotel.

A European visitor pocketed the diamond and took it to his room, after finding the gem on the floor of the Dubai hotel, the police said.

The diamond belonged to an Arab woman, who filed a complaint at the Dubai Police, saying that she believed she lost it while she was in the property. She did not remember whether she accidentally dropped it in the parking lot or at the hotel entrance, so she sought help, according to a senior officer.

The police immediately dispatched a team from the Bur Dubai station to search the locations she visited but the diamond was not found.

The officer pointed out that by reviewing the camera footage at the hotel, they found a scene where a person picked up something from the ground. He was identified as a European guest residing in the hotel.

Investigators approached him and asked about the diamond but he denied having it. However, when the police searched his room, they found it in a small handbag. He told the cops that he had kept it because he did not know its owner.

The police then called the owner just four hours after she filed the complaint and delivered the diamond to her.

The officer urged the public to hand over documents, money or precious items they find to avoid legal consequences. “If the person is not able to go to the police personally, he or she should at least inform the operations room.”

Hand over any item you find to the nearest police station. If you’re unable to go there personally, contact the police operations room.” Senior police officer
