From riches to rags

- SARAH TARYAM

It has been a few weeks since the horrendous allegations against Harvey Weinstein, one of Hollywood’s most powerful players, first emerged. Numerous women have come forward with claims of sexual harassment and assault by the movie mogul. These names include big stars such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Lupita Nyong’o as well as countless other women from Hollywood. This week we take a close look at the downfall of this real life predator.

The 65-year-old movie producer had a reputation for being an Oscar magician. If an actress wanted to win an Oscar, Weinstein was the man who was going to make that happen. Little did anyone know what was going on behind closed doors. Many actresses have said that he would threaten to ruin their careers if they did not comply with his seedy demands. When speaking about working with him, Paltrow has said that she felt she had to keep up appearances to save her career.

As the list of women accusing him continues to grow, Weinstein’s career is in tatters. He has been fired from the company which he ran with his brother. His wife and mother of his two children has announced she is divorcing him and the film academy has publicly cut their ties with him.

In light of this scandal, the stories of harassment of women in Hollywood are coming out of the woodworks. On social media actresses are tweeting support for the victims as well as encouraging anyone who has been abused to speak out. The fact that people are talking so openly will hopefully discourage any big shot from thinking he can abuse his power ever again.
