US presidential debate lacked energy

-

I only listened to the first 30 minutes of the debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and I think Mr Trump zeroed in on the major issue of bringing jobs back to America and renegotiating trade deals ( Clinton, Trump battle fiercely over taxes, race, terror in opening debate, September 27).

President Barack Obama spoke of bringing jobs back to America, but never executed any real plans to do so.

On the matter of energy and energy self-sufficiency, neither candidate spoke about a real strategy. Mrs Clinton spoke mainly about renewable energy but failed to talk about the domestic oil and gas industry, which employs thousands of people directly and indirectly.

What should have been debated was having a balanced energy policy that supports both renewables and non-renewables. Randall Mohammed, Dubai All Mr Trump proved is that he is incapable of following the simple protocol of a formal debate. If he can’t cope with that, he has no hope of ever coping with presidential responsibility. Toby Masson, Dubai For good or bad, Donald Trump will perhaps win the election to be the 45th president of the United States.

That is because he is clear, blunt and upfront about his political aims and views notwithstanding mainstream Democratic and other opposition.

On the other hand, Hillary Clinton is seen as devious and untrustworthy, with a husband who brought the entire American justice system into disrepute during the Monica Lewinsky scandal and his subsequent impeachment trial.

Who would you rather have as president – a successful businessman who is upfront with his often admittedly extreme views or a married couple who have for years used their respective positions for political gain and personal power?

The electorate demands clarity and honesty. They can get those attributes from “tell-itlike-it-is” Trump but rarely, if ever, from the “behind-closed- door” Clintons. Name withheld by request
