UAE and India discuss ways to counter violent extremism,
NEW DELHI // The UAE and India celebrated their “robust” ties yesterday, solidifying their partnership through agreements and a commitment to supporting each other at the United Nations.
They reaffirmed their commitment to building this partnership in a joint statement as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, concluded a three-day visit to New Delhi.
He and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi “expressed satisfaction that these ties have been maturing into a robust relationship across a broad spectrum of political, economic, trade and investment, energy, education, culture and security spheres”, reported Wam, the state news agency.
They agreed to support each other’s UN candidacy and campaigns, noting calls among UN member states for the reform of the UN Security Council, including expansion in both categories of membership, to make it more representative of the contemporary world. Mr Modi thanked Sheikh Mohammed for the UAE’s support for India’s candidacy for permanent membership in the UN Security Council. The two men condemned all forms of terrorism and stressed the importance of efforts to stop terrorist networks and their financing. They agreed to coordinate efforts to counter radicalisation and misuse of religion by groups and countries. Sheikh Mohammed and Mr Modi condemned the terrorist attacks in Kabul and Kandahar on January 10, and Mr Modi offered condolences for the UAE and Afghans killed. Five Emiratis died in the bombing in Kandahar.
Agreements were also signed in law enforcement and combating transnational organised crime such as drug and human trafficking, illegal migration, fake currency smuggling and money laundering. Sheikh Mohammed voiced appreciation for the contributions of the Indian community in the UAE, saying Indian expatriates were highly respected for their peaceful nature and work ethic.
Mr Modi thanked the UAE leadership for ensuring the welfare of the Indian community and the labour reforms undertaken by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.
They agreed to work towards an early conclusion of a revised agreement on labour and manpower during a meeting to be held in the first half of the year. Sheikh Mohammed welcomed Mr Modi’s proposal to develop cruise tourism and explore the feasibility of cruise routes between the countries.
