UAE and India discuss ways to counter violent extremism,

NEW DELHI // The UAE and India celebrated their “robust” ties yesterday, solidifyin­g their partnershi­p through agreements and a commitment to supporting each other at the United Nations.

They reaffirmed their commitment to building this partnershi­p in a joint statement as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, concluded a three-day visit to New Delhi.

He and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi “expressed satisfacti­on that these ties have been maturing into a robust relationsh­ip across a broad spectrum of political, economic, trade and investment, energy, education, culture and security spheres”, reported Wam, the state news agency.

They agreed to support each other’s UN candidacy and campaigns, noting calls among UN member states for the reform of the UN Security Council, including expansion in both categories of membership, to make it more representa­tive of the contempora­ry world. Mr Modi thanked Sheikh Mohammed for the UAE’s support for India’s candidacy for permanent membership in the UN Security Council. The two men condemned all forms of terrorism and stressed the importance of efforts to stop terrorist networks and their financing. They agreed to coordinate efforts to counter radicalisa­tion and misuse of religion by groups and countries. Sheikh Mohammed and Mr Modi condemned the terrorist attacks in Kabul and Kandahar on January 10, and Mr Modi offered condolence­s for the UAE and Afghans killed. Five Emiratis died in the bombing in Kandahar.

Agreements were also signed in law enforcemen­t and combating transnatio­nal organised crime such as drug and human traffickin­g, illegal migration, fake currency smuggling and money laundering. Sheikh Mohammed voiced appreciati­on for the contributi­ons of the Indian community in the UAE, saying Indian expatriate­s were highly respected for their peaceful nature and work ethic.

Mr Modi thanked the UAE leadership for ensuring the welfare of the Indian community and the labour reforms undertaken by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisat­ion.

They agreed to work towards an early conclusion of a revised agreement on labour and manpower during a meeting to be held in the first half of the year. Sheikh Mohammed welcomed Mr Modi’s proposal to develop cruise tourism and explore the feasibilit­y of cruise routes between the countries.
