DUBAI // Traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai will soon be alleviated by the completion of new roads in residential areas.

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai finished road works in 16 districts at a cost of Dh835 million.

Next month, new roads in Al Mamzar and Al Nahda 1 will be opened, and improvement of roads in Nad Al Sheba 4 is due for completion by the year end.

The infrastructure project includes the construction of single-lane and dual carriageway streets across a 20- kilometre stretch, refurbishment of road networks in the area, and the provision of 30 parking places.

The project works also include the installation of more traffic lights on Amman Street to streamline traffic flow at the entrances and exits of Nahda 1, as well as directional signs, ground markings and traffic signals.

“These projects are part of the Five- Year Plan , endorsed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for constructing internal roads in several Dubai districts at a total cost of about Dh1 billion,” said Mattar Al Tayer, the authority’s director general.

“The construction of these roads stems from the desire of Sheikh Mohammed to improve the road network, to meet the needs of residents and address the requirements of urban development and demographic expansion, which will eventually translate into happiness for the people.”

Mr Al Tayer said the authority would open the internal roads project at Al Mamzar and Nahda 1 – which comprise four districts, north and south of Cairo Street and north and south of Baghdad Street – at a cost of Dh118m.
