World leaders condemn attack

ABU DHABI // The UAE yesterday condemned the deadly terrorist attack on a pop concert by US star Ariana Grande in Manchester.

President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed sent condolence­s to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, state news agency Wam reported.

Sheikh Khalifa expressed his sincere condolence­s to the Queen, her government, and families of the victims of the attack. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, also sent cables of condolence­s to Britain.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Internatio­nal Cooperatio­n said the UAE’s “unwavering stance rejects terrorism in all its forms and manifestat­ions”.

The ministry stressed support for the British government in the face of terrorism, and expressed its sincere condolence­s and solace to the British government, people, and families of the victims of the criminal act.

Other leaders from around the world were also united in expressing solidarity with Britain and condemning the Manches- ter attack, one of Britain’s deadliest in years.

United States

US president Donald Trump condemned the “evil losers” responsibl­e for the deadly attack.

“The terrorists and extremists and those who give them aid and comfort must be driven out from our society forever,” Mr Trump said in Bethlehem.

France

French president Emmanuel Macron voiced his “horror” at the attack.

Mr Macron “learnt with horror and shock about the attack that occurred yesterday evening”, his office said.

Germany

German chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her “sorrow and horror” , vowing that Germany will stand by Britain in the fight against terror.

“This suspected terrorist attack will only strengthen our resolve to work with our British friends against those who plan and execute such inhuman acts,” she said.

Italy

“Italy joins forces with the British people and government,” Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni tweeted. “Our thoughts go out to the victims of the Manchester attack and their families.”

European Union

Europe is mourning with Britain after the concert bombing in Manchester, European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said.

“Today we mourn with you. Tomorrow we will work side by side with you to fight back against those who seek to destroy our way of life,” he said.

Russia

“We firmly condemn this cynical, inhuman crime,” the Kremlin said on Tuesday as president Vladimir Putin said he was ready to boost anti-terror cooperatio­n with Britain.

“We expect that those behind it will not escape the punishment they deserve,” the Kremlin said.

Canada

“Canadians are shocked by the news of the horrific attack in Manchester tonight. Please keep the victims & their families in your thoughts,” Canadian prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted.
