Nation’s leading institute sets sights on top 100 place

Australia’s 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia makes UAE World Cup qualificat­ion a tough task,

AL AIN // UAE University is ranked highest among the country’s higher education institutio­ns in world rankings for 2018.

The university claimed a spot in the top 400 for the QS World University Rankings, a popular league table for internatio­nal students. It moved 21 places from last year’s rankings, claiming the 390th slot. UAE University’s PhD programme was listed as a vital step in transformi­ng it into a research-intensive university.

Ali Al Nuaimi, the university’s chancellor, described the ranking as “very good news”. “The fact that United Arab Emirates University is now in the top 1.5 per cent of universiti­es in the world, and the top university in the UAE, is truly something to be celebrated,” he said, referring to about 26,000 world universiti­es analysed for the rankings. “We have aspiration­s to be among the world’s best 100 universiti­es, and we have plans to ensure we achieve this.”

UAE University, located in Al Ain, was establishe­d in 1976 and has about 14,000 students and more than 800 faculty.

Other UAE universiti­es in the list were American University of Sharjah at 441, tying with Arabian Gulf University of Bahrain. Khalifa University, American University of Dubai, University of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi Uni- versity were also ranked. Massachuse­tts Institute of Technology in the US led the global rankings for the sixth successive year.

Saudi universiti­es secured the top spots in the Gulf region, with King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals at 173, up 16 places from this year’s rankings.

Produced by global education analyst Quacquarel­li Symonds, the rankings also rate universiti­es by subject and employabil­ity ratios.
