Best fake steal of the day Nick Faldo pretended to steal the Claret Jug as he marked his 60th birthday with a special practice round ahead of the British Open Championship. Faldo is not competing at Royal Birkdale, but the three-time winner gained permission from tournament organisers to partner defending champion Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose in a match against Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen. Stenson and Rose were due to play nine holes each alongside Faldo, whose victory at Muirfield in 1992 remains the last by an Englishman. After posing for photographs on the first tee, Faldo ran down the fairway with the Claret Jug hidden under his shirt, before stopping for pictures to be taken with members of his family.

Sri Lanka denied Zimbabwe their first Test series away win in 16 years by chasing down a record-breaking 388 to win the one-off Test by four wickets in Colombo. Niroshan Dickwella (81) and Asela Gunaratne (80 not out) shared a sixthwicket century partnership to help Dinesh Chandimal’s side complete the highest fourth-innings chase in Sri Lanka, beating Pakistan’s 382-3 two years ago.
It was also the highest successful run chase in Sri Lanka’s Test history, and the fifth highest ever by any nation. It also helped Sri Lanka avoid further embarrassment against Zimbabwe following the 3-2 loss in the one-dayers that preceded the Test.

Rangers have been fined by Uefa after fans were found to be guilty of throwing objects onto the pitch during last month’s Europa League first leg against Progres Niederkorn at Ibrox. The Glasgow side, who were knocked out of the competition after surprisingly losing
2-1 on aggregate to the Luxembourg minnows in the first qualifying round, have been ordered to pay €7,000 (Dh29,473) for the behaviour of their fans.Play had to be stopped during the match on June 29 - which Rangers won 1-0 - after bits of screwed up paper were thrown onto the pitch near to where to the Progres goalkeeper was stood.
