HOW THE QATAR CRISIS UNFOLDED
▶ June 5: The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Bahrain – known as the quartet – sever diplomatic and transport links with Qatar.
▶ June 6: Mauritania joins the boycott and Jordan reduces its embassy staff in Doha.
▶ June 9: The quartet publish a list of people and organisations they accuse of involvement in terrorism.
▶ June 19: The UAE’s foreign minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, says the boycott could last years.
▶ June 20: US president Donald Trump presses Qatar to stop financing terrorism “immediately.”
▶ June 22: The quartet send a list of 13 demands to Qatar. They include curbing relations with Iran, closing a Turkish military base in Qatar and shutting down the Al Jazeera network. Doha is given 10 days to comply
▶ July 3: The ultimatum is extended for 48 hours. ▶ July 5: Meeting in Cairo, the quartet deliver six principles on which any resolution must be based.
▶ July 5: Kuwait – acting as main mediator – delivers Qatar’s rejection of the demands. ▶ July 11: Washington and Doha sign an agreement to cut off funding for terrorists. ▶ July 20: Omar Ghobash, UAE Ambassador to Russia, says Qatar tipped off Al Qaeda about a UAE military operation in Yemen. ▶ July 22: In his first public comments, the emir of Qatar calls for negotiations. ▶ July 26: Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Anwar Gargash, says it is time to” go on without Qatar.”
▶ July 27: Qatar hires a PR firm founded by a former aide to Donald Trump.
▶ July 30: The quartet meet in Manama, Bahrain to discuss further measures
