Manchester City got the new campaign off to a winning start while new boys Brighton & Hove Albion were given a lesson in the harsh realities of the Premier League.

City rarely got into second gear as they strolled to victory at the Amex Stadium. Sergio Aguero put Pep Guardiola’s side in front on 70 minutes before Lewis Dunk inadvertedly put one through his own net as Brighton, one of the favourites to be relegated, were left in no uncertain terms that a long hard season lies ahead.

In yesterday’s other action, newly promoted Huddersfield Town enjoyed a triumphant start to life in the Premier League as they shocked Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

David Wagner’s side have not been in the top flight of English football since 1972, but they quickly acclimatised to their new environment as two goals from Steve Mounie, after they had gone in front through an own goal from Joel Ward, gave them an emphatic win. Mounie said the work done in pre-season had been crucial to their fast start.

“It is amazing, a start like this and for me to score two goals on my Premier League debut,” he told the BBC. “We won our first game and it is amazing for the fans, coach and all the people in Huddersfield.

“We worked all day during pre-season, we worked hard and the coach gave a us a lot of advice. The consequences of our work has shown and we hope we do well in the next game.”

Ahmed Hegazi’s goal on his debut in English football proved enough for West Bromwich Albion to start off their campaign in winning fashion as they beat Bournemouth 1-0 at The Hawthorns.

The Egyptian defender, who is on loan from Al Ahly, got on the end of Chris Brunt’s free kick to nod home and give Tony Pulis even more reason to celebrate on the day it was announced he had signed a new contract that will keep him in charge until 2019.

“We worked hard for the goal. We played compact,” Hegazi said. “I hope we continue like this in the rest of the season. I know before, we had fantastic defenders in our team. We tried to do more.”

There was no winning start for Mauricio Pellegrino at Southampton as they played out a goalless draw with Swansea City at St Mary’s Stadium.

Pellegrino was left to lament his side’s inability to find the net with Manolo Gabbiadini and Nathan Redmond among the guilty parties.

“We did everything to win the game but we couldn’t,” the Argentine said. “We controlled the ball, created chances but this is football. You have to get goals and we couldn’t do so.

“As a manager, we can work on how to create chances but sometimes it is really difficult to score. We had 29 shots.”

Swansea manager Paul Clement Clement conceded his side were fortunate to sneak a point, then said he hopes for a quick resolution over Gylfi Sigurdsson’s future, who is wanted by rivals Everton, so he can land targets of his own.

“If that does go through then we can start acting on potential targets,” Clement said. “I want to do that kind of stuff in private until there’s something certain.”
