Spanish striker Jese scores on Stoke debut to down Arsenal as West Brom win at Burnley

Jese made it a memorable debut in the Premier League, scoring on his first outing for Stoke City with what proved to be the winner against Arsenal.

The Spanish striker, signed on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain last week, looked sharp throughout at the Bet365 Stadium before his strike just after half time broke the deadlock.

It means Mark Hughes’ side avoid a repeat of last season when they had to wait until Ocotber to record their first league win of the campaign.

Arsenal had legitimate claims to a goal themselves, as replays showed record-signing Alexandre Lacazette was on side when he rifled the ball home from inside the Stoke area before being ruled out.

Elsewhere yesterday, it was back down to earth with a bump for Burnley.

A week after they had shocked Premier League champions Chelsea 3-2, they were beaten 1-0 at home by West Bromwich Albion courtesy of substitute Hal Robson-Kanu’s goal.

Even though Robson-Kanu was later sent off, Burnley could not find an equaliser, and Sean Dyche, the side’s manager, told the BBC: “It is a tough one today because I was not happy with the result but I was happy with the performance. We are laying down some good markers.”

Charlie Austin’s stoppage-time penalty gave Southampton a 3-2 victory over 10man West Ham United.

Manolo Gabbiadini and a Dusan Tadic penalty had put Mauricio Pellegrino’s side two goals up, but despite having Marko Arnautovic sent off for elbowing Jack Stephens, two goals from Javier Hernandez got West Ham level.

But Maya Yoshida was bundled over by Pablo Zabaleta and Austin converted the spot-kick.

Pellegrino said: “We have the three points, we have to keep learning. We created chances but we have to score the third goal a bit earlier.”

Slaven Bilic, the West Ham manager, said: “We are very disappointed we lost a point but we gained a lot of things. We showed character, quality and that we can cope with 10 men and we can score two goals.”

Leicester City bounced back from the disappointment of losing 4-3 at Arsenal last weekend as goals from Shinji Okazaki and Harry Maguire gave them a 2-0 triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The defeat leaves Brighton still without a point, and Chris Hughton, the side’s manager, said: “We can’t be the type of team that lose goals from set plays. It’s a learning curve for us.”

Marco Silva picked up his first victory as Watford manager as his side were 2-0 victors at Bournemouth thanks to second-half strikes from Richarlison and Etienne Capoue.

“We had a very good second half, we controlled it and had lots of chances to score and we deserved the three points,” Silva said.
