Delph backs ‘flying’ Man City to keep up fine form

Midfielder hopes to take part in League Cup tonight at West Brom

-

Fabian Delph has warned West Bromwich Albion that Manchester City are “flying at the moment” as the Premier League co-leaders travel to the Hawthorns tonight to contest the English League Cup third round.

City are enjoying a stunning run of form that includes a 5-0 win over Liverpool, a 4-0 victory at Feyenoord in the Uefa Champions League, and the 6-0 thrashing of Watford on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side now turn their attentions to the first domestic knockout tournament of the season with a visit to West Brom, and Delph believes the confidence within City will make them very difficult to stop.

“The mood is what you would imagine,” Delph said.

“The boys are flying at the moment

“The new guys that have come in have been terrific and we seem to be gelling nicely as a team.”

The League Cup has traditionally been used by the Premier League’s title-chasing clubs to rotate their squads, affording key players some rest while giving game time to players not considered regular starters.

Delph, who is yet to feature in the Premier League this season, could be in line for a place in the City side tonight.

Captain Vincent Kompany could also be set for a return after resuming full training this week from a calf injury.

Given the impressive squad depth at City, Delph expects Guardiola to make sweeping changes to the team.

“The game will probably give some of the lads a nice, well-deserved rest and a few people that haven’t been playing the chance to get some game time under their belt,” the midfielder said.

“It’s a tremendous squad, we’ve got two players in most positions.

“It’s very healthy, competition-wise. It always helps to have a squad, to have the ability to rotate, and give the lads that need a rest, a rest and the lads that need game time, game time.

“The new additions that have come in are doing very, very well and I expect them to keep improving us.

“I can’t see anything but positive things coming out of this season.”
