Former wife sent abusive WhatsApp messages

- SALAM AL AMIR

A policewoman has been convicted of insulting and threatening on WhatsApp the new wife of her former husband.

The Emirati defendant, in her 40s, was not at Dubai Court of Misdemeanours when she was sentenced to two months’ jail.

Prosecutors said her Emirati husband divorced her and married another woman last year.

The victim, also an Emirati, said that on August 7 last year she received the first WhatsApp message from the officer’s phone number.

She said the message includ- ed foul language but she did not respond.

From that day until August this year the victim received messages containing insults and inappropriate images.

They came from the former wife’s number and from anoth- er 11 numbers, said the victim, who called police after she told her husband she could not take the insults any more.

“She called me an animal, trash, home wrecker, husband thief, rotten and many other very bad words,” she testified.

The former wife was contacted by police and told to attend to Al Qusais police station for questioning.

Officers said the woman admitted the offence and they seized mobile phones and Sim cards in her possession.

But she failed to appear before court. She can appeal within 14 days.
