Reem Mall construction under way with expected completion date by end of 2020
Construction has begun on Reem Mall, the long-delayed, $1.2 billion (Dh4.41bn) shopping centre on Reem Island.
Planned in 2008, Reem Mall was among many developments put on hold because of the global financial crisis the same year.
But Al Farwaniya Property Developments yesterday confirmed that building started late last year.
The mall will have more than 2.9 million square feet of retail, leisure and entertainment sites – including Snow Park Abu Dhabi – when it is complete.
Vast areas of the site were cleared and prepared in the first three months this year before major structural concrete work was finished, the developer said.
Construction is due to be completed by the end of 2020, Al Farwaniya said.
“Reem Mall will set a new benchmark for shopping, leisure and entertainment in Abu Dhabi and beyond,” said Shane Eldstrom, chief executive of Al Farwaniya.
“We have taken the time to thoroughly plan the financing and the physical construction of the project to ensure that it delivers a world-class destination that Abu Dhabi and the UAE can truly be proud of.”
Al Farwaniya is a partnership between three Kuwaiti companies – Agility, its affiliate United Projects for Aviation Services, and National Real Estate.
Reem Mall site is in the island’s Najmat district, which is projected to be home to 200,000 residents by the time the mall is completed.
