The National announces investments in future journalism
At The National’s Future Forum yesterday, a series of exciting developments for the news organisation were announced. These included
The National will aim to engage the future shapers: our young people. We will kick off with five young fellows this week at the forum. Fellowships will be open to young UAE nationals who will help to inform our editorial drive in covering issues that will affect the future. The National will offer a number of fellowships open to young Emiratis from a range of specialisms. Fellows will spend a term engaging with The National. They will gain in-depth knowledge of the changing media industry through being invited to seminars by experts, academics and thought leaders. Each fellow will have a coach to guide them to produce a piece of research of publishable quality during their tenure. They will also be asked to contribute two articles or videos on issues related to the future.
The Future Editor
The National Future Forum is a long-term initiative. After this inaugural event, we will continue with The National
Future Forum as a series of editorials, thought pieces, interviews and thought leadership events. This initiative will be led by our Future Editor. The National will be the first regional publication to formally dedicate a role for a Future Editor. The role is global in reach, regional in its focus, and will drive the vision and implementation of The National Future Forum.
The Future in Depth
The future is a multi-layered concept – a story of history, science, technology and anthropology. Our shared future will be shaped by a mix of science and culture that is more than a linear projection into the future. We at The National aim to explore that future, discuss scenarios of the unknown and their implications for how we live today, what decisions we make and how we can all shape our shared future. We will consider dives that affect the future of the UAE and the region, such as the future of aviation, global logistics, renewable energy, jobs and space exploration.
The Future of News – as young people see it
The National will open a competition for best article and short video looking into the Future of News, as seen by young journalists. This should be a journalistic endeavour, rather than comment, looking at the dynamics affecting the future of news. More details will be announced in the near future.
