Houthis torture girl and another Yemeni to death

- ALI MAHMOOD Aden

A girl and another Yemeni were tortured to death by Houthi rebels at a makeshift prison in a girls’ school south of Hodeidah, the Minister of Human Rights said yesterday.

“The family of the girl received a phone call from the Houthis on Sunday telling them to come to take their daughter’s body,” Mohammed Askar told The National. Mr Askar said about 5,000 people were being tortured in Houthi prisons.

In Enma, a city north of the port city of Aden, a roadside bomb exploded near the car of the governor of Taez province on Tuesday, Amin Mahmood, injuring him and four of his guards.

Mr Mahmood was driving from the home of Cmdr Fadhel Hassan when the device exploded about 300 metres from the house, a military spokesman said.

President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi called Mr Mahmood and praised him for his courage and determination after the incident.

Meanwhile in Riyadh, Yemen’s Prime Minister Ahmed bin Daghr rejected claims that the separatist Southern Movement was an Iranian-backed militia.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Mr bin Daghr denied having said that the movement was affiliated with Iran.

Aden’s former governor Abdul-Aziz Al Muflehi accused the prime minister of comparing the movement with the Iranbacked Houthis.

It caused an uproar in Aden where residents felt that their men’s sacrifice to liberate the country from Houthi control was being undermined.
