An Indian living in Dubai has been beaten to death by a mob after claims that he was involved in cattle theft.

Shahrukh Khan, 20, worked as a tailor in Dubai and had returned to his home village in Uttar Pradesh state, northern India.

Khan died hours after being beaten by the mob in Bareilly district on August 29.

The attack was reported at a police station, where officers said Khan was in extremely poor shape.

The Indian Express reported that Khan succumbed to his injuries in the district hospital. A post-mortem examination stated that he died of kidney and liver failure.

“Around 8pm on Tuesday, Shahrukh was called out of his house by his friends Mazid Ali, Abid and one unidentified person,” his elder brother Feroz told the newspaper.

“When he did not return home till late in the night, I made enquiries, and was told that Mazid had not returned home either.”

The brother later received a call from police telling him that Shahrukh had been admitted to hospital.

Reports claimed he accompanied his friends while they stole cattle but was unable to escape with them across the Nakatia River.

A complaint has been registered with the police against 25 people of Bholapur village for Khan’s death. No arrests have been made yet.

The killing has been widely reported in Indian media.

In July this year, WhatsApp limited the number of times people in India could forward a message to five after a spate of killings where messages on the social media platform spread like wildfire.

In the same month, Supreme Court of India condemned the epidemic of mob killings in India. Many states in India have banned killing cows and eating beef.

Khan may have been the victim of a mob killing, the likes of which have swept India fuelled by the use of social media
