Israeli prime minister coy over Damascus missile attack

-

Syrian state media yesterday accused Israel of targeting Damascus’s main airport in Saturday night’s missile attack.

Government news agency Sana posted pictures showing what appeared to be air defences opening fire.

Explosions during the attack were heard across the Syrian capital.

A war monitoring group said the missiles were aimed at an arms depot used by Iranian forces or Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the depot was near the airport where new weapons were recently delivered.

The monitoring group had no word on casualties.

Israel did not officially confirm or deny the Sana report, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday that his country was taking action to stop its foes from getting sophisticated weapons.

“Our red lines are as sharp as ever and our determination to enforce them is stronger than ever,” Mr Netanyahu’s said at the his cabinet’s weekly meeting. This month, an Israeli military official said it had struck more than 200 Iranian targets in Syria over the past 18 months.

Israel is believed to be behind a series of air strikes mainly targeting Iranian and Hezbollah forces that joined the civil war to fight alongside the government of President Bashar Al Assad.

The United States and Israel have said they want both Iran and Hezbollah to withdraw from Syria.
