Entire European team to play in Dubai next month

- JOHN MCAULEY

All 12 members of the victorious European Ryder Cup team will tee-off in Dubai next month, after they reclaimed the trophy in comprehensive fashion on Sunday.

Thomas Bjorn’s side secured a 17.5-10.5 win against the Unites States at Le Golf National in France, winning back the cup they lost at Hazeltine two years ago to mark their sixth successive triumph on home soil.

The entire team, including captain Bjorn, will be present at the DP World Tour Championship in little more than six weeks’ time, as the season-ending event on the European Tour takes place as usual at Jumeirah Golf Estates (JGE). The tournament runs from November 15-18.

“We are so excited that all members of the victorious European Ryder Cup team will be coming to Dubai to play in the 2018 DP World Tour Championship,” said Nick Tarratt, director European Tour International, Dubai Office. “It was a special week for everyone in Paris and Dubai will be perhaps the first time the 12 will all be playing in the same tournament.

“We will also welcome captain Thomas Bjorn to Dubai in other roles around the DP World Tour Championship, so it will be a full house. We have also started discussions for the Ryder Cup Trophy to be on display during the week.” Among those competing in Dubai will be European No 1 Tommy Fleetwood, who took four points from a possible five in France, and trusted Ryder Cup partner Francesco Molinari, the reigning British Open champion.

The Ryder Cup roster includes former DP World champions Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson, while defending champion Jon Rahm returns to the scene of his one-stroke victory last year on debut.

The defeated US side are set to be represented at JGE, too, with Patrick Reed poised to take part. The American, the reigning Masters champion, sits second in the season-long standings, behind Molinari.
