... and it’s not only meat – all processed foods pose some risks to health

- Gillian Duncan

Fizzy drinks

They are highly processed and loaded with sugar, chemicals, additives and colouring.

They have next to no nutritional value and the list of health problems they are linked to is long. Studies have also shown that drinking two sugary soft drinks a week doubles the risk of pancreatic cancer, and they have been proven to cause diabetes.

Cereal

This is packed with refined grains and sugar – often more than half of the recommended daily sugar intake for an adult woman.

Eating too much sugar can raise your risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Starting your day with a sugary cereal leads to insulin and blood sugar spikes, which leads to cravings for more high-carbohydrate snacks later in the day.

Cake

This may taste delicious but once again it is loaded with sugar – and fat, additives, salt, colourants and preservatives to boot.

Cakes also include trans fats to increase their shelf life, but studies have shown that these fats can affect memory.

Mass-produced bread

This is not the type of bread you buy in a deli.

It is considered to be ultra-processed and contains many dubious-sounding chemicals like calcium propionate and chlorine dioxide, as well as dough conditioners and possibly toxic ingredients.
