Indian web series goes global with Netflix

- Chris Newbould

Smash-hit, fly-on-the-wall, Indian YouTube drama Little Things went global at the weekend, when season 2 of the show released to a worldwide audience of more than 100 million Netflix subscribers on Friday.

The show, which aired its first season from September last year as five 15-minute episodes, stars Dhruv Sehgal and Mithila Palkar as urban couple Dhruv and Kavya. Episode one picked up over 10 million views on producer Dice Media’s YouTube Channel, which would certainly go some way to explaining why Netflix picked it up for season 2.

Little Things follows the trials and tribulations of a young, Indian couple as they negotiate their way through life. Rather than aiming for melodrama, it focuses on, as the name implies, the little things that affect the lives of a typical couple. As Palkar explained to Indian Express recently: “Our show is about little things, it’s not dramatic. There’s no deliberate conflict in it. We have not gone out of our way to make it more dramatic. It is about trying to find fun in the mundane.”

With its mix of comedy, drama, and everyday drudgery, the show has already captured the imagination of internet audiences in India and beyond through its debut outing on YouTube. With the higher production values, bigger marketing budgets, and captive audience base offered by the switch to global giant Netflix, it remains to be seen how much further the show can make an impression in living rooms around the world.

Season 2 will bring eight 30-minute episodes to Netflix, with the option to extend for further series in future.
