Abu Dhabi’s new welfare scheme set to go live

- DANIEL SANDERSON

The scheme will open gradually in different areas of Abu Dhabi, but the first payments will be made in April

Emiratis can apply online for support in Abu Dhabi as of this Sunday after the launch of a website explaining the overhauled benefits system.

The new grants will be for low-income UAE nationals, with payments made to families rather than individuals. Family incomes will be topped up by the state if they fall below a certain level.

The system will also include training for those able to work. In a partnership with government agencies, candidates will be matched to jobs that complement their potential and abilities.

Training is compulsory for those receiving support or members of their family if they are able to work.

Elderly citizens, or those with special needs, will be able to apply for support in person at special centres if they are not comfortable using computers.

The scheme will open for applications gradually in different areas across Abu Dhabi but the first payments will arrive everywhere in April.

“This programme is part of our leadership approach to empower low-income national families, enhance their standards of living, ensure their decent living and to achieve their financial independence as the Emirati family is an essential component of society,” said Hamad Al Zahiri, director of the Social Support Programme.

The system is being administered by the Department of Community Development.

Expenditure surveys were used to calculate a minimum income. The head of a family is deemed to need at least Dh7,450. Family members aged 14 or over would add Dh3,725 each, while Dh2,235 would be paid for those under 14.

The head of the family is required to make the application. The department says its approach “will enhance family ties among its members to help them achieve financial independence”.

Beneficiaries must renew their application annually and tell the authorities if their circumstances change.

Applications will open from Sunday at www.ssa.gov. abudhabi. Centres for those who require assistance in person have been set up in Dhafra, Madinat Zayed, Ghayathi, Al Silaa, Liwa, Mina and Dalma Island from 8am to 3pm.

The scheme will be launched in Al Ain on January 20 and then in Abu Dhabi city on February 24.

Applications will be reviewed until March 31. Applicants who qualify for support will have their payments backdated to January.

Emiratis will continue to benefit from other guarantees and subsidised services.
