How the Ucas results and clearing system works

- KELLY CLARKE

A-level exam results will be released this morning – and pupils who applied for university places will find out if they have been accepted or not.

Candidates across the UAE can access their A-level grades in two ways: by visiting their school or by logging on to their school results system.

At 8am UK time – 11am in the UAE – the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service will update applicants’ records through an online system.

Users can then check what conditional offers they have received from their chosen universities.

Thousands of A-level pupils in the UK and abroad will have access to the system at the same time tomorrow, so online delays are expected.

Pupils whose applications have not been updated are advised to log out of the tracking system before logging back in again.

Applicants can also contact their chosen universities directly for more information.

For those who have missed out, in some cases universities might make an offer regardless, depending on other candidates’ performance and average grades. Until October 23, candidates can use the clearing service to see which courses still have places available.

Ucas clearing gives prospective students the chance to find places on university courses, if and when future plans do not quite pan out. A list of vacancies can be found on the Ucas website.

This year the UK’s Russell Group universities – 24 of the best – have a record number of clearing places available.

The University of Manchester this year doubled the number of clearing courses to 291, while the University of Glasgow has 529 courses with places still available.

Once candidates apply for clearing they will be given a unique user number.

When an applicant makes a shortlist of the courses they are interested in, they should call up each university, giving them this clearing number, a personal ID and the number of Ucas points gained through A-levels.

The university will then contact the candidate during the clearing period if they have a place available.
