US is vital to Korean peace, China says
China said the US held the key to breaking the stalemate on the Korean Peninsula, with tension growing because Pyongyang refused to return to denuclearisation talks with Washington. Yesterday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the US was vital to the process. US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held two summits on denuclearisation but no agreement was reached. US Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun rejected reports he wanted to meet North Korean officials during a visit to South Korea this week, but said the US was open to resuming talks. Last month, North Korea ended all communication with the South.
