UAE reports 1,798 cases as another 1,492 recover from virus
The UAE recorded 1,798 new coronavirus cases yesterday, taking the country’s overall tally to 489,495.
Another 1,492 people beat the virus, increasing the number of recoveries to 473,398.
Four people died from complications caused by Covid-19 to bring the death toll to 1,541. The number of active cases stands at 14,556. The latest number of new cases is the lowest since March 21, when 1,717 infections were recorded.
Health authorities reported about 2,000 new cases for several days, with numbers having declined significantly since January. Mass testing and the nationwide vaccination programme have been integral to the UAE’s efforts to tackle the pandemic.
The authorities said yesterday that 138,734 vaccine doses were administered in the previous 24 hours. A total of 9.29 million doses have been administered so far – a rate of 93.98 doses for every 100 people.
The authorities urged the country’s young people to take the vaccine to help break the chain of infection.
The National Youth Strategy defines this group as people aged between 15 and 35. People aged 16 and above are eligible to receive the vaccine.
“We call on our youth to get vaccinated, which will have a positive effect on society by breaking the chain of infection and maintaining [the] UAE’s achievements in combatting Covid-19,” said Saeed Al Nazari, director general of the Federal Youth Authority.
“Abiding by the rules is an individual responsibility and a national obligation to keep communities safe.”
