UAE ranks as safest place in the world to walk at night

-

People feel safer walking at night in the UAE than anywhere else in the world, a global survey has found.

At least 95 per cent of people in the Emirates feel safe when walking alone at night, the Gallup Global Law and Order 2021 report showed.

Norway was second on the index, with 93 per cent of its population feeling safe.

The Emirates was ranked second in the highest law and order index, with a score of 93. Norway led the index with 94 points.

Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, credited the country’s leadership with ensuring the public felt safe.

“With the wisdom of Sheikh Khalifa, and the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and the support of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, the UAE achieved first place,” Sheikh Saif said on Twitter.

Gallup’s survey was based on people’s perceptions of their own security and trust in the rule of law.

The responses were collected during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic and the first half of the second year.

The places that received the top scores in the highest law and order index were Norway (94), the UAE (93), China (93), Switzerland (93) and Finland (92).

The UAE led the way for a sense of safety when people were out walking at night.

Norway (93 per cent), China (91 per cent) and Slovenia (91 per cent) completed the top four.

Last month, Georgetown University released its Women, Peace and Security Index, which ranked the UAE as the safest country for women to walk at night in.

The survey found 98.5 per cent of women felt safe while walking alone in their neighbourhoods at night.

Singapore was ranked second with 96.9 per cent.

This year, a survey by Numbeo named Abu Dhabi as the safest city in the world, with Dubai and Sharjah included in the top 10.
