President Sheikh Mohamed has said the condolences paid by people around the world after the death of Sheikh Khalifa have been a source of comfort.
He said the messages had helped his family as they mourn the late president.
World leaders and dignitaries have travelled to Abu Dhabi to pay their respects.
“The heartfelt condolences of people from across the UAE and around the world have been a source of comfort to our family as we mourn the late Sheikh Khalifa,” Sheikh Mohamed tweeted yesterday.
“This response is a testament to his far-reaching impact and the respect that was felt for him both at home and abroad.”
The UN Security Council opened its meeting yesterday by honouring Sheikh Khalifa with a moment of silence.
UAE ambassador to the UN Lana Nusseibeh gave thanks and spoke of his legacy and achievements.
“Sheikh Khalifa devoted his life to his country and people and inspired his nation with his dedication, wisdom and humility,” she said.
Sheikh Khalifa’s granddaughter says she will continue his sustainability legacy.
Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan is the founder and chief executive of the Alliances for Global Sustainability.
In a message to an event in Rome today, recorded before Sheikh Khalifa’s death was announced, she quotes her great-grandfather and UAE Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, saying: “We paid the utmost care and attention to our environment, for it is an integral part of the country, our history and our heritage.”
Sheikha Shamma’s message, which will be broadcast at the summit of the European Institute of Innovation for Sustainability, said her goal was to keep resources in use for as long as possible through reuse and recycling.
Last year the UAE became the first country in the Middle East to announce a net-zero by 2050 strategy in the fight against global warming.
“The UAE has pledged to leave no one behind as we build a green economy and pave the way towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050,” Sheikha Shamma said.
