Ramadan initiative distributes 6,000 meals in Dubai
Authorities in Dubai have distributed 6,000 iftar meals in Barsha Heights to mark the start of the holy month.
The Hala Ramadan initiative, organised by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in co-operation with Dubai Holding, distributed 2,000 iftar meals on each of the first three evenings of the holy month.
Muslims and non-Muslims in the area received the meals as part of the drive, which aims to promote tolerance, coexistence and solidarity.
People from different nationalities gathered near Hamel Al Ghaith Mosque for the initiative, which included sessions held in Arabic and English to teach people about Islam.
Children were also given the opportunity to learn handicrafts and play sports.
“The initiative aims to make Dubai an attractive hub of Ramadan to all residents and tourists and to introduce the concepts of Islam, tolerance and authentic inherited traditions of Emirati people,” said Dr Hamad Al Shaibani, director general of the department. He helped to distribute the iftar meals.
Abdulaziz Al Gargawi, chief executive of Dubai Community Management, said the initiative brought people from different backgrounds and countries together.
“Such gatherings will provide an opportunity for residents and visitors to meet and celebrate the holy month of Ramadan and to engage in several educational, sports and family activities,” he said.
“Such distinguished events and experiences are part of our vision of building united communities.”
Members of the public in Dubai must apply for permission from the authorities to distribute iftar meals.
