The National launches graduate journalist training programme

- THE NATIONAL

The National today launches a graduate training programme to identify and develop the UAE’s most promising young journalists.

The news organisation wants three talented young people to join its ranks in a dedicated sixmonth training programme.

These are paid positions for full-time work.

The journalists will gain unrivalled insight into breaking news, foreign affairs, the world of business and multimedia content. At the end, if they progress to the standards set by the newspaper, they will be welcomed on board as fulltime employees.

“We want to hear from young graduates who aspire to make their voices heard,” said editor-in-chief Mina Al-Oraibi.

“The Middle East has some of the great untold stories of our time. We want talented young journalists to tell them to the world”.

Successful candidates will be mentored by seasoned journalists from across The National’s newsroom. They can expect to contribute to rolling news coverage. They will seek out the best informed voices on foreign affairs, diplomacy and geopolitics, to tight deadlines.

They will get out into the community and meet some of the people who make the Emirates the leading country that it is.

And they will help to set the agenda by working closely with The National’s opinion writers and columnists.

On multimedia, they will be trained to have the confidence to speak on camera, and the skills to edit the finished product. They will also learn to use analytics, statistics and web tools to ensure stories get the reach they deserve.

The course is open to graduates of UAE universities who are fluent in English.

The National is particularly keen to hear from young Emiratis, at a time when the private sector is being transformed by their recruitment.

Candidates should be in their final year at a university based in the UAE. Those who have graduated in the past two years and are living in the UAE are also eligible.

The ability to speak to people you do not know is essential.

An aptitude for podcasts, presenting to the camera and harnessing social media to share stories – and bring in great tales of your own – is ideal.

Candidates should send a CV, cover letter and work samples to graduateprogramme@thenationalnews.com by May 23. A shortlisted group will be interviewed by a panel of editors and there will be one test assignment.
