President Sheikh Mohamed arrives in India for talks with Modi and business summit
President Sheikh Mohamed arrived in India yesterday for a working visit, where he was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sheikh Mohamed’s itinerary includes discussions with Mr Modi on ways to build on the strategic partnership between the two countries, state news agency Wam reported.
The President was also expected to attend a three-day global business summit in the western state of Gujarat.
“Today, I met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ahmedabad to further cement the strong ties that unite our two nations,” said Sheikh Mohamed.
“The partnership between India and the UAE continues to flourish and our talks today explored ways to boost collaboration that will support economic growth and sustainable development for the benefit of our people.”
The leaders discussed issues of mutual interest and reinforced their support for efforts supporting peace, cooperation, stability and the resolution of conflicts through dialogue and understanding, Wam reported.
The need for a ceasefire in Gaza was also discussed, as was as the importance of ensuring an escalation of the conflict was prevented.
After the President’s arrival at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, the leaders were shown a large artwork featuring their portraits. They also watched a performance by a traditional arts group.
Mr Modi travelled with Sheikh Mohamed from the airport, with many residents lining the streets and waving the flags of the UAE and India.
A dinner was also held by Mr Modi in honour of Sheikh Mohamed.
This was attended by UAE officials including Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed, National Security Adviser and Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed and Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the President.
The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, which Sheikh Mohamed is attending, is a biennial investors’ international business event to attract funding and promote the state.
It was introduced by Mr Modi in 2003, when state minister.
“It is a matter of immense joy that various world leaders will be joining us during this summit,” Mr Modi said on X yesterday.
“The coming of my brother Mohamed bin Zayed is very special.”
Sheikh Mohamed visited India last September for the G20 Ministers meeting in the capital, New Delhi.
The UAE and India signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, helping to boost bilateral trade to $38.6 billion in the first nine months of 2022.
