Work on roads, drains, street lighting and pavements in four locations in eastern Dubai has been completed, officials have said.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority said it has finished construction work on roads in Margham, Lehbab, Al Lisaili and Hatta.

The project spanned 35km in total – 18km of roadwork, and the addition of lighting along another 17km of existing streets.

In Margham, roads have been extended by 5km in an area along Dubai-Al Ain Road, near Skydive Dubai. Work includes pavements, rainwater drain networks and street lights, said the RTA. The project serves more than 1,100 residents.

Under the RTA’s project in Lehbab, pavements have been extended by 4km, along with improvements to rainwater drains and street lights. The project also covered lighting work on streets extending 2km at the Dubai-Hatta Road, beside Lehbab Camel Race Track. The project serves more than 3,000 residents.

At Al Lisaili, the project included street lighting work for roads at Saih Assalam near the Last Exit and Al Qudra Lakes, over 7km. This serves about 2,900 residents.

In the RTA project in Hatta, about 2km of road has been laid at Suhaila, along with work including drains and street lights. This serves about 6,000 residents.

“The project reflects the RTA’s commitment to upgrading the infrastructure of roads, street lights, and rainwater drainage systems in residential communities,” Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the RTA, said on Thursday.

The completion of this work comes after about six months’ of rain fell across the UAE last weekend, as a major storm swept through most of the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology said last Sunday that almost 60mm of rain fell in Dubai, while 78mm – the highest recorded in the country – fell on Khatam Al Shaklah in Abu Dhabi.

The Fujairah neighbourhood of Al Farfar recorded 77.4mm of rainfall, while in Al Ain 25.4mm fell, the centre said.

The UAE’s average rainfall is less than 100mm a year.
