Air strike kills dozens at refugee camp in enclave

- ISMAEEL NAAR

More than 30 people were killed when an Israeli air strike hit a house near Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp on Friday, the enclave’s Health Ministry said.

Survivors said at least seven displaced families were living in the building, and that many are thought to be trapped beneath the rubble.

The victims were among 123 people killed in Gaza in the previous 24 hours, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

Israeli strikes near Nuseirat continued on Saturday, killing at least seven, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

Witnesses also reported air strikes and fighting in Khan Younis, Gaza’s main city in the south, as well as in the north where Israeli planes fired missiles at a seven-storey block of flats near Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza city, killing residents, Wafa reported.

The Israeli military said its air strikes near Nuseirat killed at least 15 Hamas fighters, including a sniper squad commander, while 10 fighters were killed elsewhere in central Gaza.

More than 31,600 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel began its campaign against Hamas, the Health Ministry says.

The war began when Hamas attacked southern Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages.

The Israeli war cabinet on Friday approved a plan for a military incursion into Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city, while also keeping ceasefire hopes alive with plans to send delegates to Qatar for talks on a hostage deal with Hamas.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he had approved a plan to attack Rafah, where more than half of Gaza’s population have sought refuge from the war.

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces raided the city of Nablus and two villages north of Ramallah on Saturday morning, Wafa reported.

Witnesses said Israeli troops entered Nablus from the west with 25 military vehicles as well as snipers.
