New exercise class combines acrobatics with yoga

-

The newest yoga trend in the capital is all about mixing acrobatics into your workout routine. Acroyoga sees yogis work together, in groups of two or three, to form gravitydefying shapes and poses.

It’s a relatively new sport to the UAE and one it’s claimed can increase blood circulation and concentration and improve communication skills, as individuals must partner together to create difficult moves.

“Acroyoga is a blend of the wisdom of yoga, dynamic power of acrobatics and the loving kindness of the healing arts,” says Salina Bakaou, an acroyoga teacher in the capital. Bakaou, who has been practising for five years, explains that the sport is about, “creating connections and holding space for others to grow”.

Acroyogis fall into one of three roles. The base, which is the individual with the most contact on the ground, who is seen as the foundation of the pose. The flyer, who is elevated off the ground, and holds elaborate poses. And most importantly, the spotter, who oversees the entire process and can catch the flyer if they fall.

While the moves are a lot more adventurous when compared to other forms of yoga, the elaborate poses have a higher risk for injury. Bakaou hurt her wrists when first starting and explains injuries can happen, “especially in the beginning, when you aren’t aware of alignment”.

Bakaou typically hosts classes outdoors in Formal Park. However, for the month of September, lessons will be hosted in the Eastern Mangroves Hotel. Each session typically lasts 90 minutes.
