Dune bashing goes extreme in Liwa

Did you know there’s a sand dune in Abu Dhabi named the Terrifying Mountain? And rightly so. Tel Moreeb, in the Western Region, is the UAE’s tallest sand dune and stands at over 300 metres high, with a 50-degree incline that makes dune bashing here a literal feat of courage.

This month you can watch brave souls try to conquer the dune at the Liwa Sports Festival. The nine-day festival, organised by Al Gharbia Sports Club, will run from December 29 to January 6 and will feature drag races, freestyle drifting, bike races, motocross challenges and a classic cars competition in the Liwa Desert.

If four-wheeled action isn’t your thing, check out the handful of heritage and cultural events on offer instead. There’ll be camel races, horse races and falcon races, as well as desert camping. December 29 to January 6
