While Kilimanjaro might be on the bucket list of hikers the world over, runners can still take in the pleasure – and pain – of the mountain at this annual African marathon. The world’s highest freestanding mountain towers over the race’s 7,000 runners, which attracts many locals. Be warned: the weather is hot and the middle slope is tough, but the beauty of Kili, its green surroundings and the energy of the local villagers, help to spur racers towards the finish line.
