Here are ten facts we bet you didn’t know about everyone’s favourite cartoon duo

1. Tom and Jerry made their debut in 1940 in an animated short released by MGM entitled Puss Gets The Boot.

2. During this first appearance, the cat and mouse were called Jasper and Jinx.



3. The names of ‘Tom’ and ‘Jerry’ were suggested by animator John Carr who won a competition among studio members to come up with names.

4. The show’s creators, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, went on to found their own studio, which gave us The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear, Top Cat and The Smurfs.

5. … they won seven animation Oscars.

6. In 1972, the emirate of Sharjah issued a set of Tom And Jerry postage stamps.

7. The original series consisted of 114 cartoons between 1940 and 1958.



8. In the 1960s, there was a period when the cartoons were made in Czechoslovakia.

9. In 1975 Tom and Jerry became friends but it didn’t last long.

10. Tom and Jerry had a reinvention in the 1990s – a prequel series was made about their early years.
