Abu Dhabi Festival returns
International classical music stars to perform in the capital
The 17th edition of Abu Dhabi Festival returns at the end of the month, promising 10 days of sensational music, dance and theatre performances in the city.
In keeping with the UAE’s 2020 theme to celebrate the next half a century, this year’s festival is titled, ‘Towards the Next 50’, and each aspect of the festival will shine a light on bringing respect, tolerance and mutual understanding to the nation.
The event opens with a trio of performances by The Cleveland Orchestra, a symphonic group of musicians that was first formed in 1918 in Cleveland, Ohio and is now one of the most admired in the world. On the second night, the orchestra will feature a very special guest appearance by world famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The third recital by the orchestra comes as an accompaniment to the American Ballet Theatre, performing Romeo and Juliet. Widely revered as one of the greatest dance companies in the world, this touring company brings one of the most widely loved stories to life on the stage. Classical music continues as the festival then brings the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra to the Arts Centre at NYU Abu Dhabi. The orchestra was established in 1994 by Riad Kudsi, a Syrian violinist, who has a conservatory of his own in the UAE.
Lastly, don’t miss Grammy nominated Gregory Porter whose warm baritone vocals have brought him acclaim with his earthy brand of jazz, soul, and gospel. Taking place at venues across the capital, the festival has something for all you culture vultures out there.
