TIMELINE: THE MAKINGS OF GREASE
1971: Grease The Musical only makes it eight months in its original incarnation in a small theatre in Chicago.
1972: Different producers take on the musical, and move it to New York, before it eventually moves to Broadway and receives seven Tony Award nominations.
1978: The Grease film, starring John Travolta, is released to rave reviews. It grosses $400 million at the box office and becomes one of the most iconic musicals of all time.
1982: Grease 2, starring Michelle Pfieiffer and Michael Caulfield, is released and rubbished by critics... but adored by some What’s On staff. 2016: Grease ‘Live’, starring Julianne Hough, Aaron Tviet and Vanessa Hudgens, presents a live, televised version of the cult classic.
