Bavarian producer Alex Bau plays at Media One Hotel

Alex Bau is a music-making obsessive. He has put out almost 60 EPs since 2002, and three full-length albums. “I’m addicted to sound,” he claims. His sound is a no-nonsense take on techno that comes on labels like Chris Liebing’s influential CLR, as well as Sven Väth’s Cocoon. Mostly, though, this artist releases on his own label, Credo.

“It stands for techno in a classic sense,” he says. “For me, that means always danceable music, but at the same time interesting, emotional and colourful.” Bau – a kid of the ’80s – has been collecting vinyl since he was 14. Though still collecting vinyl, his club set up now is largely digital, but he promises “the approach is still the same”. It takes him everywhere from Buenos Aires to Tokyo, and will bring him to Dubai this month to play for Decibel. Very much a contemporary talent with an old-school attitude, Alex says building a relationship with the crowd is as important as the music and the place where it is played.

“Lack of sleep, travel-issues like delays, missed connections, can all happen sometimes, but as soon as I find myself behind the mixer, playing my first track and seeing smiling and dancing people on the dancefloor in front of me, everything is fine and I’m in a different, very positive and excited mood, fully focused on the music and with an idea where I want to bring the night,” he says.
