An Antipodean melting pot in the Marina
Fancy going out for a drink in the Marina but don’t want to change out of your flip-flops/jandals? Well, this is the place for you. Nezesaussi – as in New Zealand, South Africa and Aussie – has been serving sport fans in Downtown for a decade, and there’s now a Neze’ in the marina that features 18 screens. The Dubai Marina branch’s main point of difference is that it’s a smoking pub (the Al Manzil option is smoke free). There are also pool and foosball tables, a pinball machine, a dart board and a jukebox – and they’re all free to use, too.
The menu is pub grub, but refined. For instance, the fried calamari starter (Dhs60) isn’t a battered ring, but a crispy, lightly fried natural squid that’s perfectly tender on the inside. You’ll find everything from pies to bunny chow for mains – but we recommend leaving room for the sticky toffee pudding (Dhs30), which is delicious. Antipodean wines start from Dhs180 a bottle, and there are three craft beers on tap (although there’s not a huge variety of South African, Australian or Kiwi lagers).
One thing we have to note is the service – just like with the other Nezesaussi, the team are friendly, efficient and on top of things. Top tip: keen to go and watch a match that you fear may be too niche to be on the big screen? Reserve one of the tables that come with their own screens and you are free to change it to whatever channel you want. Bonza.
