AMONGST FEW

Can a streetwear brand succeed in f&b?

-

Exposed plumbing. Breeze block walls. Filament bulbs. Somewhere there’s a handbook to decorating cafés in Dubai that’s being shared around on the sly. But in fairness to Amongst Few, they’ve added a touch of novelty that helps bring the café to life. The café is meant to extend the streetwear brand’s aesthetics. There are records, art pieces and lyrics from some of the most unusual rap tracks running across a news ticker. This is Amongst Few’s first foray into food, and while the menu here isn’t hugely imaginative – there’s a bit of Thai, Italian and Japanese fusion – it is executed well. The star dish is the sushi bowl (Dhs60), a deconstructed Japanese meal of rice, wakame, avocado, pak choi and a giant slab of juicy salmon fillet. A close second, though, is the lemon pepper chicken (Dhs56) – a moist, yet crunchy, hunk of chicken served with crispy tempura kumara and potato fries. As the wise words of Jules Santana flashed in front of us (I stick toothpicks in all y’all hors d’oeuvres), we finished with a light and fruity blueberry cheesecake (Dhs30), delicious dairy-free sorbet (Dhs25), and a strawberry and chia pudding (Dhs30).
